Why Take a Ghost Tour in St. Augustine?
As the oldest city in America, St. Augustine has seen more than its share of history, and not all of it is pretty.
Long before Jamestown or Plymouth Rock, this coastal town was the site of battles, pirates, plagues, fires, and more. In fact, the Matanzas River — meaning “slaughter” in Spanish — hints at just how dark the past really is.
With centuries of eerie legends and haunted places, a St. Augustine ghost tour is one of the most fascinating ways to experience the city’s story — with a ghostly twist.
Best Ghost Tour in St. Augustine: Old City Ghosts
There are a lot of options when it comes to ghost tours in St. Augustine. However, on our recent trip to St. Augustine, we took the Wraiths of the Watchtower tour with Old City Ghosts, and would highly recommend it.
Here are a few reasons why we think that the Wraiths of the Watchtower with Old City Ghosts is the best ghost tour in St. Augustine:

✅ A Haunted History Lesson
The thing I loved most about the St. Augustine Ghost Tour with Old City Ghosts is that it focused a lot on St. Augustine’s dark history.
As our tour guide said “you don’t need jump scares or made-up stories when talking about St. Augustine, this city is filled with plenty of real ghost encounters and 500 years of dark history.“
We’ve visited St. Augustine many times over the years, but we honestly learned so much more about St. Augustine’s history in just 1 hour while taking this tour.
Not only were we entertained by the chilling ghost stories and paranormal encounters, but we also walked away with a deeper appreciation for the city’s rich — and often eerie — history.
In my opinion, this tour is perfect for those that love history (like myself) and want to walk the historic old town of St. Augustine while listening to intriguing (and spooky) stories about the city’s past.
✅ Modern-day Ghost Encounters & Stories
Although the tour covers ghost stories and tales from the past 500 years of St. Augustine’s history, it also goes into details of modern day ghost sightings.
The walking tour takes you around to the most haunted sites in the city – where you’ll hear about the chilling ghost stories. Make sure to keep an eye on the windows as some guests have even seen what appears to be faces in the shadows.

From spooky ghost encounters at the A1A Alehouse to the recent discovery of human bones underneath the city – there are plenty of scary modern day ghost stories during this tour!
✅ Family-Friendly Ghost Tour
While the Wraiths of the Watchtower Ghost Tour included some pretty scary ghost stories, I still found it to be a family-friendly option — specifically for older kids and teens who aren’t easily frightened.
So, if you are visiting St. Augustine with kids than the 8pm tour is a great fit. It’s educational without feeling like a history lesson — instead, they’ll be hooked by the fascinating, spooky stories woven throughout St. Augustine’s haunted past.
However, if you aren’t visiting with kids and want to experience an even scarier version of the tour, I’d recommend checking out Old City Ghost’s Ultimate Dead of Night Tour. This 90 minute tour leaves at 10pm and dives even deeper into St. Augustine’s chilling past.
✅ Fits Perfectly Into a Busy Itinerary
Another reason I liked this tour is that it was so easy to fit into our schedule. There is a lot to do here and it can be hard to fit everything in, especially if you are only spending 1 day in St. Augustine.
Since this tour started at 8pm, it was easy to enjoy dinner in old town before heading to the tour. Plus, the tour is 60 minutes long so you can also enjoy some of St. Augustine’s nightlife afterwards!

The Scariest Ghost Tour in St. Augustine
We took the 8pm Wraiths of the Watchtower tour, and enjoyed its blend of history and spooky storytelling. It’s a great fit for anyone looking for a family-friendly tour that mixes ghost stories with history.
However, if you’re searching for the scariest St. Augustine ghost tour, the Ultimate Dead of Night Haunted Ghost Tour is the one to book. This 90-minute walking tour takes you to some of the city’s most haunted locations — and you’ll hear some downright chilling ghost stories while visiting each spot.
This tour starts at 10pm, which amplifies the eerie atmosphere of St. Augustine’s old streets. Our tour guide also mentioned that booking on a weekday (Monday-Wednesday) can be especially spooky as the streets of downtown are much emptier which adds to the overall ambience.
