If you are planning a trip to Tampa, you might be wondering is Tampa safe to visit? The good news is yes – Tampa is a safe place to visit.
As a local that has lived in the Tampa area for 5+ years I feel safe exploring downtown Tampa and the low crime rates match that sense of security in most parts of the city.
However, as with most big cities, some areas of Tampa are safer than others. This guide highlights the safest neighborhoods based on crime data and my personal experience as a Tampa local.
I also have a full post on the safest hotels in Tampa, so if you are looking for a safe place to stay make sure to check that out next!

Tampa has a low crime rate compared to other cities of similar size, with around 21 crimes committed per ever 1,000 residents.
In 2024, the Tampa police department reported that crimes in downtown Tampa were lowering significantly, and that crime rates were down 10% compared to previous years.

Tampa’s Safest Neighborhoods
Overall, Tampa is a pretty safe city to visit but just like other cities there are some neighborhoods that are safer than others.
Below you will find a guide to the safest neighborhoods and areas in Tampa.
Davis Island
Davis Island is the larger of the two islands near downtown Tampa. Davis Island is best known for its waterfront views and residential, community feel.
This is also one of the most affluent areas in Tampa and is where many of the historic mansions and celebrity homes are located.
Since this is more of a residential area, there aren’t as many bars, restaurants, and shops here – but there are vacation rentals. Its a good option for those wanting to explore a beautiful, laid back area in Tampa while still being just minutes from downtown.
Harbour Island
This is the smaller island, located directly next to Davis Island. While Harbour Island is smaller it does have some highly rated restaurants with waterfront views such as American Social and Jackson’s Bistro.
It is also where the Westin Tampa Waterside is located, which is a perfect hotel for waterfront views in Tampa.
South Tampa

South Tampa is the large peninsula region to the southwest of downtown.
It consists of several different neighborhoods including Bayshore Beautiful, Ballast Point, Palm Ceia, Sunset Park, Virginia Park, Hyde Park, Arbor Greene, and a few more.
South Tampa is a beautiful area, with many waterfront areas such as Bayshore Blvd. This part of Tampa is also known for being an affluent area and is also home to many shops, restaurants, parks, and more.
Hyde Park & SoHo
Hyde Park & SoHo (South Howard St) are both a part of South Tampa. However, I wanted to mention them separately as this is a great area for tourists to visit.
Hyde Park is where you will find the adorable Hyde Park Village which is a walkable area with restaurants and several boutique & luxury shops. If you are looking for an Instagram vibe – Hyde Park Village is it.
Nearby, you will find SoHo which is South Howard St. This is a popular bar area in Tampa and there are several different bars along this street. Its a safe place to bar hop but the crowds tend to be more of college kids to late twenties/early thirties.
Downtown Tampa

Downtown Tampa is a safe part of the city to visit and stay at. In the past 10 years downtown Tampa has seen a big revitalization with many new buildings, parks, and restaurants in the area.
Some popular areas in downtown Tampa include Armature Works, the Tampa Riverwalk, Amelie Arena, and Curtis Hixon Park.
While downtown Tampa is safe to visit, I do recommend being cautious of your surroundings as you would in any big city. I personally don’t like to walk around downtown late at night (after 1am) and I also would recommend using extra caution during major events and festivals due to events that have happened across other major cities in the US in recent years.
In general, I think most locals would agree that downtown Tampa is very safe, especially during the day or earlier in the evenings.
There is also a decent police presence during events and festivals, which adds to the security and safety.
I also want to recommend that you should absolutely walk along the Tampa Riverwalk – it is a safe part of downtown and is such a nice walk in Tampa!
Channelside
Next to downtown Tampa, you will find the Channelside District which is home to popular places like Sparkman Warf and the Florida Aquarium.
Channelside is a safe area of Tampa to visit – espeically around Sparkman Warf and the Tampa Riverwalk.
As with downtown Tampa, I wouldn’t recommend walking around by yourself late at night, especially outside of the Riverwalk and Sparkman Warf areas.
Seminole Heights
Seminole Heights is another safe area in Tampa. Seminole Heights is known for its historic craftsman-style bungalows, diverse restaurants and bars, vintage shops, live music venues, and art galleries.
It’s a neighborhood that has more of a local vibe and is perfect for those wanting to experience a less touristy part of the city.
Areas to Avoid in Tampa (Or Be More Cautious In)
I want to start off by saying that these are the areas that visitors will probably want to avoid in Tampa due to higher crime rates and safety concerns.
This isn’t to say that these areas are “bad” but more so that it is either an area to exercise increased caution or avoid if you are just visiting for vacation.
Ybor City
Ybor is Tampa’s historic district, known for its rich Cuban history and vibrant nightlife. This is a cool place to visit in Tampa, but there are some safety concerns here.
I don’t think everyone should totally avoid Ybor but it is important for visitors to know that Ybor and surrounding streets have much higher crime rates than other parts of the city.
Most of these crimes take place in the surrounding streets of Ybor and are related to gang violence and drug trafficking.
The safest part of Ybor is along the main street – 7th avenue. Along this street you will find many bars, breweries, restaurants, and Cuban cigar shops.
Since 7th Avenue is the heart of the tourist area of Ybor, you will typically see a police presence on weekend nights.
However, even along 7th avenue in Ybor you should be cautious as crime has been higher in this area in recent years. I would also recommend not staying in Ybor past 11pm/12am as most of the crimes happen late at night. Tampa has been working to improve safety in Ybor, but it isn’t quite there yet in my opinion.
So, is Ybor safe to visit?
Maybe, but plan to visit during the day or early evening and stay in the main area around 7th avenue. You should also use increased caution due to the higher crime rates in Ybor.
This is my personal opinion as a local, but I don’t think Ybor is good for family vacations. It is an area more aimed at nightlife for adults and with the safety concerns I personally wouldn’t bring young kids there at night.
Drew Park
Drew Park is an area near Tampa International Airport that has higher crime rates compared to other parts of Tampa. These crimes include violent crimes, assault, gang violence, and drug trafficking.
North Tampa
North Tampa refers to a small neighborhood, not everything north of downtown. This small neighborhood is not too far from the University of South Florida but unfortunately has higher than average crime rates.
Sulfur Springs
Sulphur Springs is located just south of the North Tampa neighborhood and has a crime rate that is 184% higher than the national average. Most crimes in this area are related to burglary, theft, drugs, or gang related crimes.
Is Tampa Safe at Night?

Tampa is pretty safe at night in most areas of the city. Especially in the safest areas like Hyde Park, Davis Island, and South Tampa it is safe to be out at night.
Downtown Tampa and Channelside are also safe at night. As a local, I have been downtown Tampa at night tons of times and felt safe.
However, I do recommend following common safety precautions while anywhere in Tampa at night such as not walking in unlit, quiet areas or walking alone super late at night (especially as a female). I’d also recommend not staying out past 1 or 2am as most of the bars downtown close at this time and there will be less people out.
Is Tampa Safe from Hurricanes?

As Tampa is located along the Gulf Coast, there is a risk of hurricanes during the hurricane season. Hurricane season runs from June to November, but the strongest hurricanes typically happen in late August to early October.
Tampa has been hit by hurricanes, and most recently parts of the Tampa Bay region dealt with impacts from Hurricane Milton in 2024 (which hit Sarasota directly) and Hurricane Helene which caused flooding along the coastline.
However, a major hurricane hitting Tampa directly is actually rare and has not happened since the Tampa Bay Hurricane of 1921.
If you are planning a visit to Tampa, you should know that there is a high likelihood of hurricanes across Florida in late August, September, and October that can affect travel plans. Hurricanes can technically come in June, July, and November too – but they tend to be smaller and less likely.
For most hurricanes there is a several day warning period (although storms can change track closer to landfall). This warning period makes it possible to prepare or evacuate the flood zones in a timely manner. Most areas in Tampa that get damage in hurricanes are near the waterfront and in one of the flood zones.
If you are concerned about hurricanes, I’d recommend visiting Tampa at the opposite time of year – from December until June.
Is Tampa Safe for Families?
Tampa is a fun and safe place for families to visit or even to live here. As a local, I frequently bring my daughter downtown Tampa and feel that it is very family-friendly and safe.
There are lots of fun things to do in Tampa with kids and even things to do in Tampa with a baby which make it a perfect family vacation destination.
If you are headed to Tampa for a family vacation make sure to read up on the best places to stay for families in Tampa.
Is Tampa Safe for Solo Travelers or Female Travelers?
Absolutely! Tampa is a safe and fun destination for solo travelers and women travelers. As a woman myself, I have felt very safe in downtown Tampa and in other parts of the city like South Tampa.
There are also a lot of fun things to do from free things like the Tampa Riverwalk to exploring the best rooftop bars in Tampa.
Transportation Safety in Tampa

Tampa does not have an extensive public transportation system, so one of the safest ways to get around the city is to take Uber or Lyft. Many neighborhoods in Tampa, like Hyde Park are also very safe and easily walkable.
There are also electric scooters and bikes you can rent in downtown via the Lime app or Spin app. Just be extra cautious when riding these as they can go pretty fast!
If you plan on heading over to the beaches or exploring different areas of Tampa, it is best to rent a car. Renting a car is safe in Tampa, however you do need to be careful when driving as car accidents can happen, especially along the major highways where people drive at high speeds.
Comparing Safety in Tampa to Other Florida Cities
If you are considering a visit to Tampa, you’ll probably be reassured to know that downtown Tampa has slightly lower crime rates than both downtown Orlando and Miami. Tampa also ranks higher in safety compared to downtown Jacksonville.

Conclusion: Is Tampa Safe to Visit?
Yes, Tampa is a safe place to visit, especially compared to other cities in Florida of similar size. Tampa has several safe areas for visitors including South Tampa, Hyde Park, Downtown Tampa, and Channelside to name a few.
Tampa is a safe destination for solo travelers and families, and with the amount of things to do and sunny weather it makes for the perfect warm vacation destination!
